Have you checked the startup items to see if there's anything suspicious starting at boot? What you're describing is definitely not normal for this laptop.
Have a look at the second part of my post, here, for a description of some of the default startup items for this laptop:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cf...

Regarding the screen issue, I'd suggest taking it back to where you purchased it, and getting it exchanged, or sending it back under warranty. The AHCI fix is in fact permanent, well, until you need to reinstall windows. It's only really something that intel themselves can fix, as they packaged the iaStor driver.

picked up one of these notebooks and first thing i noticed was the 3min+ startup. renamed the parameters folder and it seems to have done the trick (now 90 seconds, better but not great). the thing is i tested the satrtup time in store and it was well under 60 seconds. i doubt they applied this fix. anyone know what the issue here is?

this is a temp solution. is there a perm one? fix ahci drivers?

Additionally, and this may pertain only to me, i have noticed the display produces artifacts. put up a black single colour page and look close. i see what appears to be hundreds of tiny flickers. appears as hough the screen is moving. anyone else have this?
