TUTORIAL on how to play burnt ISOs (or backups) on a Nintendo Wii without the use of mod-chips (i.e: the wiikey)Firstly, I would like to point out that all the software used in this tutorial wasn’t created by me. I only created the icons and descriptions for 2 of the homebrew apps and (of course) wrote this tutorial. I also compiled all the files and folders so you could just drag and drop instead of having to unRAR everything individually (like I had to do!).

Introduction
This tutorial is intended to explain exactly how you can play burnt game’s (backups or downloaded ISOs) on a wii that doesn’t contain a mod-chip. This tutorial contains no opening of the wii and any special tools or gizmos. It is meant to be very easy to understand, so please don’t comment saying you’re not stupid. I want this tutorial to cover every aspect of wii modification and will be happy to modify it where necessary. Please e-mail me at scottanthony909@hotmail.com if you have any comments, suggestions or feedback on this tutorial or anything else Wii related. ENJOY! 

Things that you will need
1. A Nintendo Wii Games Console
2. A PC running Microsoft Windows XP/Vista with a writeable DVD drive
3. An SD card (any capacity will do)
4. An SD card reader (You could use a PS3 if you have one that runs Linux)
5. The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess (played at least once on the Wii you are hacking)
6. A few good quality DVD+RWs.
7. Extracted using WinRAR: “Scott Anthony’s Wii Software hack.rar”. This can be found
HERE

Step 1 (Twilight Hack)
1. Take your SD card out of your Wii and place it in the SD card reader or PS3.
2. Format the SD card to FAT16 (in Windows it’s just called FAT)
3. Open the downloaded folder (“Scott Anthony’s Wii Software Hack”) and navigate to /homebrew files/twilight hack and the homebrew channel
4. Copy both the private folder and the boot.elf file onto the root of your SD card (drag them directly on)
5. Eject the SD card from the computer and replace it in the slot in the front of your wii.
6. Turn on the wii and, using the wiimote, select the wii icon in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, then select Data Management, then Save Data and then select Wii.
7. Find your ‘The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’ game save, select it and then select Erase. When asked to confirm this action, select yes.
8. Now return to the previous screen and instead of selecting wii, select SD card.
9. Select the twilight hack (Europe & Japan use the file named Twilight Hack. USA use the file named Twilight Hack0 or if not possibly try Twilight Hack2) game save icon. Then select copy. When asked to confirm this action, select yes.
10. Return to the wii menu and insert ‘The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’ into your Wii DVD drive. Start the game and run the twilight hack save game.
11. Once in the game, walk backwards and the Homebrew Channel will automatically install.

Step 2 (SD Card Setup)
1. Take your SD card out of your Wii and place it in the SD card reader or PS3.
2. Copy the 2 folders from the /homebrew files/preparation files onto the root of your SD card.
3. Eject the SD card from the computer and replace it in the slot in the front of your wii.
Step 3 (CIOS installation)
1. Turn on your Wii and select the homebrew channel icon from the Wii menu.
2. When this has loaded, you will see some applications appear in a list. Select the WAD manager install file and then select load.
3. Then, on your wiimote, press the A button twice, press the + button and then press the A button again. CIOS will now install. Press the A button, followed by the home button to complete the installation.

Step 4 (DVDX installation)
1. Turn on your Wii and select the homebrew channel icon from the Wii menu.
2. Select the DVDX file and then select load.
3. Then, on your wiimote, using the d-pad: select advanced install and then press A. Again using the d-pad, scroll left until IOS249 is displayed. Move down using the d-pad to Install and select this with the A button. After it has installed, move down using the d-pad to exit. This will return you to The Homebrew Channel.
At this point, you are finished with your Wii. It is now ready for the specially brunt DVD.

Step 5 (Preparing the game)
1. Obtain (legally: of course ) a .ISO file of the game you wish to play.
2. Place this .ISO file in the /backup creator folder of the downloaded files.
3. Right click on the .ISO and select open with and then navigate to the backup creator application.
4. Once this is finished, it will create another .ISO file called partition. Re-name it to the name of the game (I.E: Wii Play-cracked). You can now delete the original .ISO.

Step 6 (Burning the game)
1. Install ImgBurn using the provided installer in the root directory of the downloaded folder
2. Insert your DVD+RW into your PC and close any prompts that may automatically appear.
3. Open ImgBurn and select Write Image File to Disc.
4. Now click on the icon showing a magnifying glass over an open folder (just along from the text ‘Please select a file…’). Navigate to the cracked .ISO and click open.
5. Select the writeable DVD drive from the drop-down list and check the box that says ‘Verify’
6. Click on the big icon at the bottom of the screen. It will now burn the game.
7. Remove the disc from your computer and label it appropriately.

Step 7 (Playing the game)
1. Insert the cracked DVD into the Wii DVD drive.
2. Open the homebrew channel and select ISO loader.
3. It will read the disc, now press A.
4. The game should load. VOILA!

Hacking a wii to enable Homebrew Apps on UNMODDED wiis too!

Now, on to the guide.

The Twilight Hack is currently the only safe, public way to enable homebrew on an unmodded Wii. The Twilight Hack is achieved by playing a hacked game save for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which executes a homebrew application from an external SD card. Examples of such homebrew elf files can be found on the Homebrew apps page.

The latest release is compatible with version 3.3 of the Wii System Menu.

Download

Usage / Installation

Required Materials:

  • SD card. You may want to format the card to ensure a consistent filesystem (for Windows user maybe use the SD formatter for better filesystem)
  • SD card reader
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that has been played at least once
  • Some homebrew to load

Inside the zip file you will find versions of the hack for all three regions. You may copy all of them to your SD card, but you will need to choose the correct one to copy to your Wii based on your version of Zelda: Twilight Princess. USA users, additionally, need to determine the correct save slot to load once inside Twilight Princess. The easiest way to check your version is to compare the text string which is on the inner circle of the data surface with the ones below.

Region Inner circle text File Save slot
Europe/Australia (EUR) RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN /private/wii/title/rzdp/data.bin Twilight Hack
Asia (JPN) RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN /private/wii/title/rzdj/data.bin Twilight Hack
America (USA) RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN /private/wii/title/rzde/data.bin TwilightHack0
America (USA) RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA /private/wii/title/rzde/data.bin TwilightHack0
America (USA) RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA /private/wii/title/rzde/data.bin TwilightHack2

Step by Step

  1. Begin by formatting your SD card to FAT16 if it is not already (in Windows it’s just called “FAT”). FAT32 should also work in the latest release. (Formatting will erase ALL data!)
    • If you get an error such as “Failed to read boot.elf (-1)!” then reformatting your SD card with the Official SD Card Format Tool may help.
    • To do this on Mac OS X, open the Disk Utility (in Finder click the Go menu, select Utilities and find it there). Your SD card should show up as two entries. Choose the second entry, and then go to the Erase tab. Select the FAT16 option in the Volume Format dropdown, and assign a name to the device (if you want to), then click Erase. Confirm that you want to erase, and then follow the rest of this guide when it’s done.
  2. Copy the “private” directory from the download to your SD card.
  3. Take your homebrew Wii executable (elf or dol file) and save it in the root directory of your SD card as “boot.elf” or “boot.dol” as appropriate.
  4. Now, put the SD card into your Wii and turn it on.
  5. Go into Wii Options –> Data Management –> Save Data –> Wii.
  6. Find your Zelda save, click on it, click “Erase”, and click Yes.
  7. Open the SD card and select the “Twilight Hack” save that corresponds to your game region. Note: Some people are having problems with the Wii not “seeing” the save file on the SD card. If you are experiencing this, try setting the archive bit for the data.bin file – in Windows this can be either be done from the file’s properties dialog (right click on it in Windows Explorer and check the box) or from the command line using “attrib +a <path to data.bin>”. More info at #wiihelp on Efnet.
  8. Click copy and then yes. Now exit out of the menu.
  9. Insert The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game disc and run the game.
    • If you have the USA version of the game, load the “TwilightHack0″ or “TwilightHack2″ version of the game as appropriate (see above).
    • Otherwise, load the only “Twilight Hack” save game.
  10. Once in the game, either walk backwards or talk to the man standing in front of you.
  11. Enjoy.
